FAQs About Retail Industry Terms
Do you have a question about retail industry terms? We’re here to answer them. If you don’t see your question below, please contact us here to let us know.
What is retail merchandising?
Retail merchandising is how retailers and brands manage their merchandise in stores. The services included in retail merchandising can increase sales by making a store floor and products more appealing to customers as well as managing inventory.
Why is retail merchandising important?
Retail merchandising can improve profit margins by controlling costs by improving the productivity of the salesfloor.
What is the difference between retail merchandising and visual merchandising?
Retail merchandising is a strategic approach that optimizes product placement, inventory management, and customer flow. Visual merchandising refers specifically to how a display, like a window display, is designed to grab attention.
What is Scan-Based Trading?
Scan-Based Trading (SBT) helps brands and retailers streamline their payment processes and supply chain and can decrease costs by maximizing operational efficiencies. Like its name implies, inventory is scanned at the point of purchase as part of the process.
How does Scan-Based Trading work?
SBT allows suppliers to keep ownership over their inventory until it’s sold to the customer. At that point, the ownership (or responsibility) passes to the retailer. SBT allows suppliers to retain control over ordering, merchandising, and delivery.
What are the pros and cons of Scan-Based Trading?
Many retailers and suppliers have transitioned to SBT as it has many advantages and fewer disadvantages than other models. Here are a few key pros and cons for your consideration.
Pros
- Improved retailer relationships
- Increased sales
- Improved visibility of product sales
- Reduced cost of inventory
- Reduction in non-sellable product
- Reduced time to market
Cons
- Initial cost of technology
- Learning a new system
- Time spent refining systems such as perpetual inventory systems
- Additional time spent on store-level inventories
What are Instant Redeemable Coupons?
Instant Redeemable Coupons (IRCs) are coupons placed directly on your inventory and are immediately able to be used at the point of purchase.
How do Instant Redeemable Coupons work?
Customers are able to use IRCs during their shopping trip. IRCs can drive more sales as they’re eye-catching and are able to used right away. They can promote buying of multiple items, preserve profit margins when you have excess inventory, and can help new brands stand out on crowded shelves.
What is Phantom Inventory?
Phantom inventory, also called “ghost inventory” is when products appear to be available at a retailer but are actually out of stock or missing.
What is In-Store Merchandising?
In-store merchandising (ISM) includes tasks done within the retailers such as taking photos of your inventory on-shelf, ensuring your planogram is followed, and your products are counted and priced correctly. Check out RSM’s ISM services to see how we can best serve you.
What are store voids?
Store voids happen when a product is not only out of stock but disappears from the shelf it’s supposed to be on. Retail loss prevention efforts, like those RMS performs, can help minimize the risk of this happening to your inventory.
What is retail store marketing?
Retail store marketing is marketing of products that occurs inside the store. Because retailers can be so large, product marketing is needed inside of them to drive customers to purchase your products.
What is retail execution?
Retail execution encompasses all of the steps that it takes to sell your products in a retail store. From inventory counts to in-store audits, retail execution is what drives sales.
How do I increase retail sales?
Retail merchandising can help increase sales by ensuring your inventory is correctly counted, on-shelf, and priced properly. It ensures that you don’t lose inventory and miss out on sales. It also helps your products look appealing to customers while they’re in the store.
